MindTouch Announces MindTouch 2009, an Enhanced Development Platform for Rich Collaborative Applications

Along with a host of powerful features for building new apps, MindTouch 2009 provides a new bi-directional message bus further extending  powerful collaborative capabilities.

SAN FRANCISCO (Web 2.0 Expo) and SAN DIEGO, April 2, 2009 – MindTouch, developers of the most popular open source collaboration platform, today announces the release of MindTouch 2009, an enhanced developer platform for building rich collaborative applications and communities, and a new bi-directional message bus that further extends MindTouch's powerful collaborative capabilities.

Watch the short video below to learn everything you need to know about MindTouch 2009

MindTouch as a Switchboard

With the new bi-directional messaging bus users are now able to setup and receive change notifications when changes are made within MindTouch 2009 or to the many applications that users plug into MindTouch 2009, such as enterprise systems, databases, office productivity applications, Web services and more.

These content change notifications are automatically pushed out from the MindTouch platform to a variety of places, selected by the user, such as email, mobile devices, or even Twitter and WordPress blogs. Users can now choose to receive an email that notifies them when a specific page changes, or when certain files are revised, or when new users are added to the system. For example, with a WordPress plug-in, users can create a Wordpress blog page, which then automatically posts the same content to MindTouch 2009. And when users collaborate and make changes to that page’s content inside MindTouch 2009, it pushes the changes back to the original WordPress page. That’s true bi-directional messaging and publishing.

The new messaging bus serves as a switchboard for every system, application and workgroup, making it easier than ever for users to connect different applications, systems, allowing them to remix data while keeping it all updated in real-time.

In addition to the new messaging bus, MindTouch 2009 offers users an auto-complete suggest feature that displays existing tags when a user wants to add new tags to a page, and also offers instant page associations without search indexing delays.

MindTouch as a Development Platform for Rich Internet Applications

With the newest release, developers are able to more efficiently develop and deploy a new breed of collaborative applications for business automation, which is highly needed in today's distributed, heterogeneous environment.

MindTouch 2009 enables developers to build rich Internet applications (RIA) by taking advantage of the new integration between DekiScript (MindTouch's scripting language) and Javascript, utilizing the JEM (JavaScript with Events and Messages) technology. JEM is an augmented JavaScript with event coordination and message passing that creates a rich user experience similar to desktop applications, and allows developers to:

  • Utilize the closer integration between DekiScript and JEM technology to create rich Ajax-based composite applications, mashups, and interactive portals.
  • Pull, manipulate, and visualize different data sources by leveraging the new enhancements to DekiScript, which allows multiple statements to be combined into a single expression for simpler coding, and offers:
    • Support for XML literals, which provide a powerful new tool for creating dynamic content in pages;
    • Support for better URI string manipulation in order to more efficiently create dynamic page links;
    • Support for generated sequences of values, which makes it simple to iterate over complex sequences;
    • Support for dynamic list and map construction to create dynamic lists, e.g., customer orders above a certain amount, sales by region, etc.

Custom Extensions through MindTouch's Front-end Plugin Architecture

MindTouch enhances its platform extensibility by now offering a front-end plug-in architecture that enables developers to extend or modify MindTouch's front-end without affecting the ability to upgrade the software. The plug-ins allow developers to adapt MindTouch to workflows specific to their organization.

Using the MindTouch plugin architecture, developers can write programs or functions in the popular PHP scripting language to add features or services to the MindTouch front-end. Examples of plug-ins that developers can add to extend the front-end are file listings, image galleries, user login and logout processing, RSS feed creation, etc.

Custom Application Development through MindTouch's New and Improved Metadata Management

Developers writing a complex application on top of the MindTouch 2009  platform now have access to local data stores with properties. These properties are key value pairs that are used to describe files, pages, or users, so now developers can use properties to add structured metadata to users, pages or files. The metadata can be leveraged to discover and aggregate related pages or content in the front-end or in any external client application using the MindTouch API.

Using the recently launched WhoRunsGov.com community site powered by MindTouch as an example, on each profile page about political figures, page properties can be used to associate the profile with a specific political party. This page property can then be accessed through DekiScript to identify and aggregate all social profiles related to a specific political party.

Other Benefits of MindTouch 2009:

  • Office document editing and write-back capability without having to save a local copy on one's desktop.
  • More efficient administration of MindTouch deployments through several enhancements to the control panel.
  • Better editorial control over pages through an advanced permissioning system, which allows more granular restrictions of users to each pages and trees.
  • Updated revision comparison between versions of page content for more comprehensible comparisons.

Higher Developer Productivity, Higher Return on Investment

For developers that are required to work in an increasingly hyper-networked and real-time world but with only static and disconnected tools, the MindTouch 2009 development platform is a game changer. The new development paradigm of creating composite applications that connect teams, applications, and systems is the first step in stopping the ongoing hemorrhaging of money from existing inefficiencies.

MindTouch offers a free open source software core and offers additional services and tools tailored for enterprise productivity enhancement, starting at $2,000.
