MindTouch Wikis breed like rabbits - Computer Business Review

The software provides a platform for collaborating on data held on disparate applications and databases through a WYSIWYG user interface that includes tools for editing, version control, indexing, and more.MindTouch has since expanded Deki Wiki’s language support and pumped over 100 new features into the software including SOA extensions and virtual appliance capabilities - both industry firsts…

MindTouch.com is now powered by MindTouch Deki Wiki. Well, mostly anyway. I still have to move a couple pages over. Go to www.mindtouch.com. What you’ll find is a more engaging and significantly more aesthetically pleasing homepage. The new MindTouch.com homepage is a major improvement both in visual appeal and in function. This was all achieved very quickly by using Deki Wiki as a kind of social/collaborative content management system. As a designer, in the past, I’ve struggled with other CMS to get them to present content just how I want it. I’m very particular. So, at first I was a little concerned about using Deki Wiki as a content management. It’s surprisingly awesome. We can edit content directly with the WYSIWYG editor or use the HTML editor for more advance edits, I’m able to easily embed flash, customize CSS, provide JavaScript, Forms, etc. And it’s all automatically versioned! Not just the pages, but the files I attach too. For example, I attach all my JavaScript source files, images, and Flash files to keep these versioned too. All the files I use throughout the site (swf, zip, doc, png, gif, js) are easily attached and versioned! No more FTP, SCP, or clunky CMS file upload forms.
If you haven’t already, open www.mindtouch.com in another tab. What you see is a “CMS” skin I built in a couple hours using the Deki Wiki “Base” skin template. If you were logged in this is what it would look like to you:

As you can see, there’s a lot you’re not seeing. I didn’t bother making the site administration and editing tools pretty because it’s only all of us at MindTouch who can login and admin the site. I’ve highlighted a few key points in this screenshot. A site admin can edit the page, or as section, browse all pages, and view all versions of a given page or files. Not shown here is the comments. I found these to be very valuable while working on the site. Aaron and I often exchange comments about pages using the page level comments. This feature has been very helpful.
Let’s talk about the home page for a moment. The first thing you’ll like notice is the new flash demo space I built. I wanted to highlight some key features of Deki Wiki without taking up a lot of screen real estate so I used Flash. Yes, I know it’s not open and free. Aaron gave me a hard time about this, but it is effective. I broke the features into 4 key categories: Install, Use, Manage, and Embed. Each category shows a brief animation detailing Deki Wiki features and displaying corresponding screen shots. In addition to the flash demo we have added the “What’s being said” section that scrolls through a number of different reviews about Deki Wiki. I did this with a little JavaScript. Lastly I exposed an RSS feed from the MindTouch blog to show the latest news, events, and updates dynamically as posts occur. Using Deki Wiki didn’t just make this all easy, it actually made things that are normally really tedious and time consuming quick and fun.
The key features that have just been great are the full XHTML/CSS/JavaScript support. There is no way I could get by on just wikitext. The built-in scripting language for creating dynamic pages from feeds or content in the wiki. Page versioing. File versioning. Search. Commenting. I was skeptical at first. I was afraid Deki Wiki would limit my freedom to implement designs of my choosing. However, I found that using Deki Wiki as a content management system made my life a lot easier and in many cases fun.
StartupSquad » Blog Archive » MindTouch reaches the first high mark
As they say, getting the first customers is the toughest job. And after that, momentum takes you places. Right now my buddies at MindTouch are hitting the momentum stage. Today the startup announced that it has now crossed 100,000 wiki downloads mark since launching Deki Wiki about a year ago.According to the company, the current download rate is 500 times per day. That is a real good number considering users are not signing up for some app, but instead downloading to install it on their server/machine.

I had a chance to look at their newest release and it is really a great alternative for anyone who is looking for a wiki that can also act as a platform for web services. Deki Wiki allows you to integrate everything from ThinkFree to Google Analytics data directly into your Wiki pages.
Mindtouch Wiki Software Surpasses 100,000 Installs
Mindtouch’s wiki software has been seeing phenomenal growth of 50% a month, and the trend seems to be continuing upward….The company isn’t willing to take all the credit for their explosive growth though. They feel this expansion is due in no small part to their user community, OpenGarden.org, that causes them to keep striving for more innovation. It’s always nice to see when a company acknowledges their users and give credit where it’s due.
Thanks for giving the Gardeners props.
Open Source at Microsoft
Open Source Provider Sees Accelerated Community Growth for .NET-Based WikiAs organizations adopt wikis for collaboration, customer relations, and knowledge management, the wikis require more features, but traditional ones haven’t kept pace. Most wikis are based on scripting languages with limited functionality that make them difficult to integrate. MindTouch has addressed these challenges with Deki Wiki…
The Microsoft Open Source Lab is featuring MindTouch and Deki Wiki in a case study (download PDF). We tried to get a Mono Project mention in the case study,
but we were unsuccessful. MindTouch Deki Wiki is, of course, 100% language agnostic; meaning you can extend the application in any programming language you like. However, the platform is composed of a services layer that’s implemented in C# on .NET or Mono and a presentation layer that’s implemented in PHP. Why in God’s name are we doing a C#/.NET and PHP hybrid? This will all become clear very soon. :-) If you’re a Gardener you probably already know how you’ll soon be benefiting from this architecture in the immediate future. The key point I want to communicate is that Deki Wiki is platform independent and programming language agnostic. MindTouch is committed to this. We’re also committed to making Deki Wiki even easier than it already is to install.

I have spoken with a few people who have tried Deki Wiki and each of them has given the tool a glowing review. It seems to be more user-friendly than MediaWiki and is a downloadable application versus the service-models from Squarespace, pbWiki and Wetpaint.
Thanks for the post Allen. And the kind words. We’re glad folks are realizing that MindTouch Deki Wiki is very highly usable and offers an exceedingly attractive user interface. Deki Wiki is in a league of it’s own not only because of this, but also because of it’s robust enterprise class feature set, Web Oriented Architecture, and complete REST based API (almost 100 functions). Deki Wiki is the only choice for the enterprise wiki or community wiki deployment. MindTouch Deki Wiki is a wiki platform that will grow with you as you scale and in features as your needs evolve.
