A few of the Gardeners have translated Deki Wiki to Japanese. Thank you all! I think Rick Cogley deserves most of this credit. He’s also been translating the User Manual to Japanese as well. Thanks Rick, you’re wonderful!
This makes language number 7 for Deki Wiki. And brings me to my next topic. It hasn’t been officially announced yet, but the guys at Mozilla have been talking about it already so I don’t mind bringing it up here. Mozilla has asked MindTouch to convert the Mozilla Developer Center (MDC) from Mediawiki to Deki Wiki. I’m bringing this up in this post about localization with good reason. MDC is currently localized for 14 countries. We plan to launch the new and improved MDC in February. We don’t want to regress MDC and we need more languages. The guys at Mozilla are reaching out to Mozilla community for translators to help with this. If any of you Gardeners are capable of assisting in translating to any of the languages we currently lack for the MDC launch please consider lending a hand in this endeavor. The following are the languages MDC is currently localized for as well as a note for each language Deki Wiki is already translated to:
- Català
- 中文(简体)
- Česky
- Deutsch (done)
- Français (done)
- Italiano
- 日本語 (done)
- Nederlands
- Polski
- Português (done)
- Русский (done)
- Español (done)
- 한국어
One of those is Japanese, I think I know which one, but I’m not certain
so I didn’t mark it as “done”.
Now for the obvious question. Will MindTouch be releasing the Mediawiki-to-Deki-Wiki converter we’re developing to migrate MDC’s 8,000 pages to the public under an open source license? Hell yes! However, I have some not-so-good news. Mozilla’s Mediawiki has been customized and this converter will be somewhat specialized to fit the bill. Specifically, Mozilla has a unique way of creating hierarchies using “:” and some other oddities that will make this converter difficult for other large Mediawiki deployments to use. Without going into great detail about this let me say that smaller deployments should have no problem using this to migrate from Mediawiki to Deki Wiki.
Another pressing point that is undoubtedly haunting you. Holy crap! MindTouch has Mozilla as a customer. Hell yes. Can you believe that? We’re all very excited here at MindTouch. Again, cred to the Gardeners for getting the word out.
Finally, and once again, thank you to all of you in the community whom have assisted in localizing Deki Wiki, aided in getting the word out, and for complaining about inadequacies and forcing us to fix them. I’m probably beginning to sound like a broken record, but we wouldn’t be here without all of you active community members.

Hi,
I’ve tried spanish with IE, Mozilla and Opera releases but it doesn’t work properly and I had to switch to english again finally. Main problems experienced were:
- any “á”, “é”, “í”, “ó”, “ú” is not properly represented and “?” character replaces them all the time. I’ve introduced some tests by myself and if you change “character code” from brownser menu you can fix it temporaly since you have to change eveytime you change/refresh from current page.
- Translatated words on menus are not properly viewed since they don’t fit on same considered empty space than english words.
Nice to know about proper fixes to this problems since local languages makes the websie more attractive and friendly to visitors.

Agustín,
Thanks for the post. The issues you cite with the Spanish lang pack should be resolved at http://www.wik.is as of last week and these updates can pulled from SVN (trunk). These updates will be part of the enterprise download with the 1.8.3 release.
Try the Spanish lang pack again at your wik.is site. If you have any problems please report them here: http://forums.opengarden.org/showthread.php?t=1173 and we’ll get them corrected ASAP.

Hello. I have a small internal site, and I would love to use your mediawiki to Deki Wiki converter. When will it be publicly available?

Russianpi,
We’re still working on the converter. It’s nearing completion. Please stay tuned to the blog and forums (http://forums.opengarden.org) for updates.

Hi, I wouldn’t mind translating to Dutch if it doesn’t involve too much work. Could you point me to where I should apply?

Wout: We already have a Dutch translation however we have an upcoming release so some of the language keys are probably missing. If you want to help out, you can get more information here: http://wiki.opengarden.org/Deki_Wiki/Languages or post a question on our forums: http://forums.opengarden.org
