Letter from the CEO: Mr. Fulkerson Goes to Washington
Earlier this month I was given the opportunity to join industry and policy experts in a discussion at the White House, addressing issues and trends in higher education and its important role in building the leaders and workforce of tomorrow.
Following a keynote address by President Obama, Summit organizer Dr. Jill Biden then spoke to the administration’s upcoming announcement of a $2 billion, four-year investment in community colleges, as well as her own experiences as an educator.

I was invited to lead a discussion with other business leaders, education experts, and state and federal policy makers on how best to achieve the President’s goal in re-establishing the United States as a world leader with the highest proportion of college graduates by 2020.
Other distinguished speakers included Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis, Melinda Gates, and others. The Summit fostered discussions of workforce education levels, economic stability, and the integral role that businesses serve in supporting college programs and students as our nation moves towards a restored economy with a uniquely skilled and well-educated workforce.
It’s been a busy October and in addition to my speaking at the White House, the MindTouch team has been feverishly working on a new solution. In conjunction with this product announcement, we’ll be introducing a very exciting alliance which will completely revolutionize and socialize the Intranet experience. Alas, I’ve probably said too much already. We will be announcing the solution soon, so be sure to check back on the MindTouch blog in the coming days.

Learn How to Make Your Documentation a Customer Acquisition Tool
Enterprise technology buyers are some of the most educated buyer types in the marketplace today. I don’t necessarily mean well-educated in terms of schooling, but more so in terms of how much they educate themselves when researching the technology they’re asked to buy on behalf of their company.
When I look at our sales wins here at MindTouch, I check out the individual opportunity records to see what our prospects “consumed” from MindTouch on their way to becoming a customer. Two years ago, downloading a trial version of the product and reading a case study might have been good enough to move forward with a purchase; today, that’s barely the tip of the iceberg.
Checklist 2.0
Whether it’s a collaboration platform, a specific solution for strategic documentation, or a point product for microblogging, technology buyers today are looking beyond datasheets to help make their buying decisions. A major component of “Checklist 2.0” for tech buyers today is a vendor’s online documentation. Yup, documentation.
Are Content Strategists the Next Corporate Rock Stars?
Content strategy is an emerging field with immense possibilities for business. Similar to its marketing cousin, content strategy seeks to position the right content with the right user experience at the right time for its intended audience. The difference however, is that content strategy is less about advertising and more about revealing your product’s story. It’s also about engagement and collaboration with potential buyers of your product.

Recently, I presented the following deck at LavaCon 2010 to illustrate the similarities between the successful career of The Rolling Stones and that of future Content Strategists. There are a many lessons to be learned from following the Stones’ career.
