Find out what your users are searching for

This week I’m going to focus on our Search Analytics report which is one of the Curation Analytics reports included with MindTouch TCS.

The Search Analytics report provides insight into what your users are searching for and what they are and aren’t finding. To get started you can login to your MindTouch TCS install and then click on Reports at the top. Note that reports are only accessible to Admins currently. Once you click on reports then click on the Search tab. You will then be presented with Popular search terms along with a table of Popular search queries. Within the Popular search queries you can see what keyword(s) users have searched for and what the top clicked results are. You can also click on the keyword(s) themselves and see all of the clicked results within the time frame specified.

Why is this important?  Let’s look at a few scenarios:

Scenario 1:

The Documentation team wants to ensure that users are finding the documentation they are looking for.  They can run the Search report and see what users are searching for and what they are and aren’t finding.  With this they can update their documentation along with creating new articles to correctly address the demand from the users.

Scenario 2:

The Marketing team wants to have a better understanding of the keywords that users use when interfacing with the documentation.  These keywords are in the user’s words and are great insight into what users are looking for and what they are ultimately finding.  This can help influence external advertising campaigns along with making sure that marketing around the product reflects words that users use.

Scenario 3:

The Product team wants to have a better understanding of the features and functionality that are most commonly used or referenced by users of the product/service.  They can review this report and pinpoint what the most commonly searched for areas are along with the articles that the users ultimately find.  This will help influence product development by getting a better understanding of what features users are looking for and not finding.

With the Search Analytics reporting, you are supplied with valuable information on the search patterns and documentation breakdown on search terms direct from your users and prospects.
